Steps forward

Barrier breaking project

Some 90 scientists work on “Human Protein Atlas”, the most expensive research projects in Sweden, ever. Estimated finish time is 2015 and then we know a lot more about the 20 000 different sorts of protein in our bodies.

When problems - protein

This knowledge will play an enormous important role for our health in the future. This because when anything malfunctions in our body, in most cases, there is a protein involved. So is the case with Alzheimer’s, ALS and Parkinson’s.
Today we lack this type of knowledge for 40 % of the human protein! One can probably not imagine the potential impact on health care in the next coming years.

Ten new proteins a day

Caroline Kampf who is one of the scientists working in the project tells an interesting story (Source: Sydsvenskan, Malmö, page A8, Monday 18 July, 2011) about how fast things can change nowadays. When she got her PhD in 2001 she had also mapped protein. Two of them. The time used was four years! Today she maps ten new proteins a day, equal to 200 proteins a month. Swedish project The work is financed by K&A Wallenberg Foundation and they have already paid more than one billiard Swedish Crowns. The project is a joint venture between Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm and the Rudbecks Laboratories, University of Uppsala, Uppsala.
