Grandchildren show us the future
Amazing observations
I have done some pretty amazing observations when I were together with my grandchildren. At all these occasions we were using some kind of modern electronic device like a mobile phone, a portable computer or some sort of appliance for games.
The young generation (1 – 15 years of age) seems to take the role as early adopters in the markets evolving due to the technology revolution. In this I include all the new devices, programs, medias etc. that emerge from microelectronic development in some way.
Increasing speed of change
Note that Moore’s Law still, at least in principle, is valid. Moore stated 1965 that the electronic chips development every 18th month would result in double number of transistors at half the cost and volume! The only change is that “transistors” is exchanged to “numerical operations”!
I think that most parts of our life are going to be turned upside down in the next coming years! To illustrate how dramatic I do believe the ”changes” are and how they already influence our life I give you some examples from my own experience.
Speed learning
Quite often our grandchildren know more about the device and the operation of it, than what Agneta and I do this is especially true when we talk about new electronic equipment. A smashing example was when Grandma Agneta proud showed Ida (10 years at the time) her brand new, latest model, mobile phone.
Ida grabbed it, opened it and started immediately to push the buttons, scroll the wheel and examined functions in a speed, hard for us to follow. After just a couple of minutes Ida told Grandma she should change the signals to something more up to date once!” She also had some other minor remarks.
She ended her feedback regarding the phone with the words:
-”Grandma, I can fix it right away if you want me to. It wouldn’t take long!”
Their brains doesn’t differ from ours regarding structure etc. But there are two major differences:
- the young generation is born with the computers, the new social networks etc. and they dont have the mental hinders that the elder generation normally have
- the increase in learning capability when using computers in combination with latest results from research about the brain is probably gigantic.
Grandchildren become teachers
The next example is about all those plays and games the young generation seems to play on in all situations of life.
I have noticed for example that our youngest Grandchild, Kajsa (now 7 years old) changes her voice from childish to caring and persuasive when she shall explain a function in a game to me! Also in her body language I notice changes. It’s obvious she automatically enters a new role she has learnt from observations of parents, grandparents and teachers etc.
To me it is obvious that our Grandchildren become our teachers in a growing number of situations!
When I go back some 50 years to my own childhood the communication pattern/roles were quite different! To even think that the children at that time should know more or better then the grown ups were, at least in my family just unthinkable! I wonder what it looks like 50 years ahead?
Changes reaching turbulence level
My major task nowdays is to market and sell the english version of my latest book “I have Parkinson’s, but Parkinson’s does not have me!” on Internet. That means that I’m working most of the day sitting i front of the computer, furiously hammering the keyboard with my right pointing finger. I am now about to reach the printing speed that is about the same as our grandchildren passed when they were six!
Interesting is also to note that quite a few of the things I am working with (tools, systems, new media, new arenas/forums etc.)I didn’t even know about most of it only a year ago!
And nowdays I Twitter, I am active on building social networks with the help of Face book and YouTube. I invest in consultants/specialists who do secret hocus pokus with AdWords. I shorten long addresses by using URL.
I am also the proud owner of a file with 600 User Names and just about 750 Passwords. I am very happy for the moment it happends that they match! Quite often they don’t! I also own a lot of books named “Owner’s Manual” and I wonder so about who the owner is. All I know is that it can’t be me anyhow. Because whe I tried to use them, I have understood nothing! Someone said they were written in a special language, called “Manualish”.
